My Three Days in Gilead: A Journey into the Heart of a Puritan Colony
Gilead, a Puritan colony nestled in the heart of the American Midwest, has long fascinated and intrigued outsiders. With its strict religious laws, conservative social structure, and unwavering commitment to tradition, Gilead presents a stark contrast to the modern world.

I recently had the opportunity to spend three days in Gilead, immersing myself in the community and experiencing firsthand the rhythms of their daily life. While my stay was brief, it provided a rare glimpse into this enigmatic and controversial society.
A Step Back in Time
Gilead was founded in the 17th century by a group of Puritan settlers who sought to establish a society based on their strict interpretation of the Bible. Over the centuries, the colony has preserved its puritanical values, maintaining a rigid social order and a deep reverence for tradition.
As I walked through the colony's streets, I was struck by its austere and orderly appearance. The houses were simple and unadorned, with white picket fences and neatly trimmed lawns. The streets were spotless, and a sense of peace and tranquility permeated the air.
Daily Life in Gilead
The daily life of Gilead's inhabitants revolves around their religious beliefs. The day begins with family devotions, followed by communal worship at the colony's meetinghouse. After the morning service, the men and women disperse to their respective tasks.
The men typically work in agriculture, while the women tend to domestic duties. Education is highly valued in Gilead, and all children attend the colony's school, where they learn to read, write, and study the Bible. The colony also has a thriving cottage industry, producing a variety of goods, including textiles, furniture, and pottery.
Social Structure and Values
Gilead's social structure is rigidly patriarchal, with men holding authority over women and children. Women are expected to be submissive and obedient to their husbands, and they are responsible for the upbringing of the children.
The community places a strong emphasis on obedience and conformity. Individuals are expected to adhere to the colony's rules and regulations without question. Those who deviate from these norms are subject to severe punishment, including public shaming and excommunication.
Challenges and Controversies
Despite its idyllic appearance, Gilead faces a number of challenges. The colony's strict social order can be stifling for some individuals, and there have been instances of young people leaving the community in search of greater freedom.
Gilead has also been criticized for its treatment of women and LGBTQ+ individuals. The colony's patriarchal structure and conservative sexual morality have drawn the ire of human rights activists, who argue that these policies are discriminatory and unjust.
A Complex and Intriguing Society
My three days in Gilead were a profound experience that challenged my preconceptions and forced me to confront my own beliefs and values. While I found some aspects of the colony's society to be deeply problematic, I was also impressed by the community's sense of purpose and commitment to their way of life.
Gilead is a complex and intriguing society that defies easy categorization. It is a place where tradition and modernity collide, where faith and freedom are in constant tension.
My journey into the heart of Gilead was an unforgettable experience that has left a lasting impression on me. While I may not agree with all of the colony's beliefs and practices, I respect their commitment to their faith and their desire to live according to their own values.
As I left Gilead, I couldn't help but wonder about the future of this enigmatic community. Will it continue to resist the forces of modernization, or will it eventually adapt to the changing world around it? Only time will tell.
