: The Power of Oral History

History, like language, is a living, breathing entity. It evolves through the voices of those who have witnessed and experienced it firsthand. Belize Da Speak, an oral history project, taps into this rich vein of personal narratives to shed light on a pivotal chapter in Belize's history: its journey to independence.

Through in-depth interviews with Belizean Creole elders, this project captures the rhythms, dialects, and lived experiences of those who actively participated in the Independence Movement. Their stories, woven together, create a vibrant tapestry that recounts the events, challenges, and triumphs that shaped Belize's path to nationhood.

Voices of the Independence Movement

"We had a vision of a Belize where we could stand up for ourselves, where we could make our own decisions about our future." - Artemio "Temo" Briceño

In the late 1950s, a groundswell of discontent began to stir within Belizean Creole communities. Faced with political marginalization and economic disparities, a group of visionary leaders emerged, determined to break free from British colonial rule.

Among them was George Price, a young Catholic priest who became the face of the People's United Party (PUP). With his charismatic oratory and unwavering determination, Price rallied the masses, inspiring a sense of national pride and unity.

Challenges and Triumphs

"The British didn't want to give up control easily. They tried to divide us, to make us doubt ourselves." - Evelia Roches

The road to independence was fraught with obstacles. The British government, reluctant to relinquish its hold on the colony, employed divide-and-conquer tactics, fostering tensions between different ethnic groups.

Despite these challenges, the Independence Movement gained momentum through grassroots organizing and unwavering support from Belizean Creoles. They held mass rallies, organized boycotts, and mobilized local communities to demand their rights.

Cultural Identity and Social Commentary

"Our language, our music, our traditions - they're all part of who we are as Belizeans. And we wanted to tell our own story." - Isabel "Tilly" Forman

Belize Da Speak is more than just a historical account. It is a celebration of Belizean Creole culture and a testament to the power of oral storytelling. Through the interviews, the project delves into the intricate linguistic nuances of Belizean Creole, the rhythms of punta and brukdown music, and the rich traditions that shape Belizean identity.

Legacy and

"Our independence was a collective effort. It was the voices of ordinary Belizeans that made it happen." - Philip Goldson

On September 21, 1981, Belize finally gained its independence from Great Britain. It was a defining moment in Belize's history, a culmination of decades of struggle and perseverance.

Belize Da Speak serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving and celebrating the voices of those who fought for Belize's freedom. By giving voice to their experiences and perspectives, this project ensures that their legacy continues to inspire and inform future generations of Belizeans.
