Z1: Let's start with your career. How did you get started as an art critic?

Princenthal: I started out as an artist. I went to art school and then got an MFA. But I realized that I was more interested in writing about art than making it. So I started writing for small magazines and then eventually got a job at Artforum.

Z1: What are some of your influences as a critic?

Princenthal: I'm influenced by a wide range of thinkers, including philosophers, historians, and other art critics. But I'm also influenced by artists themselves. I think it's important for critics to be in dialogue with artists.

Z1: What do you think is the role of art criticism in the 21st century?

Princenthal: I think art criticism is more important than ever in the 21st century. There's so much art being produced today, and it can be difficult to know what's worth paying attention to. Art criticism can help people to understand and appreciate contemporary art. It can also help to hold artists accountable.

Z1: What are your thoughts on the state of contemporary art?

Princenthal: I think contemporary art is in a very exciting place right now. There are so many different artists working in so many different ways. I'm particularly interested in artists who are using their work to address social and political issues.

Z1: What advice would you give to young people who are interested in becoming art critics?

Princenthal: I would advise young people who are interested in becoming art critics to read as much as they can about art and art history. They should also try to get as much experience writing about art as possible. And they should be open to new ideas and perspectives.

Z1: Thank you for your time, Nancy. I've really enjoyed talking to you.

Princenthal: It's been my pleasure.
