Early Life and Education

Born in 1963 in San Francisco, California, Scott Bartlett displayed an unquenchable thirst for space from a young age. Inspired by the Apollo missions, he excelled in science and math, earning a degree in Aerospace Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1985.

NASA Career

After graduating from MIT, Bartlett joined the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Over the next two decades, he served as a payload specialist and mission specialist on numerous Space Shuttle missions.

One of Bartlett's most notable contributions was his work on the Hubble Space Telescope. As a member of the crew of STS-61 in 1993, he helped deploy the telescope into orbit, enabling astronomers to capture stunning images of the cosmos.

Shuttle Commander and ISS Construction

Bartlett's leadership qualities shone through as he was appointed Commander of STS-79 in 1996. During this mission, he and his crew successfully docked with the Russian Mir space station, marking the beginning of a new era of international space cooperation.

Bartlett continued to play a pivotal role in the construction of the International Space Station (ISS). As Commander of STS-100 in 2001, he led the crew that installed the Canadarm2 robotic arm, a vital component for ISS assembly.

Spacewalk Pioneer

Throughout his career, Bartlett became renowned for his exceptional skills as a spacewalker. He completed a total of eight spacewalks, totaling over 40 hours outside the Shuttle or ISS.

During these spacewalks, Bartlett performed a variety of tasks, including installing equipment, conducting experiments, and repairing satellites. His meticulousness and ability to work under extreme conditions earned him the respect of his fellow astronauts and NASA engineers.

Retirement and Legacy

After retiring from NASA in 2005, Bartlett continued to share his passion for space exploration through public speaking and educational initiatives. He became a sought-after voice on topics such as space science, technology, and the future of human spaceflight.

Scott Bartlett's legacy as a pioneer in space exploration is enduring. His contributions to the Hubble Space Telescope, the International Space Station, and spacewalking technology have paved the way for future generations of astronauts and scientists.
